New Delhi: The national capital is gearing up for one of the biggest diplomatic events of 2026 as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit on September 12 and 13. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will welcome leaders from the expanded BRICS group along with partner countries and international organisations.
The summit, being held at Bharat Mandapam, comes at a time when global discussions around trade, energy security, supply chains, investment and international governance are gaining importance.
Several prominent world leaders are expected to participate in the two-day summit. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are among the key leaders scheduled to attend the event.
Other BRICS members expected at the summit include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Brazil will be represented by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
The BRICS grouping now includes 11 full members Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The summit agenda will focus on strengthening multilateral cooperation, improving trade and investment partnerships, ensuring energy and food security and addressing challenges related to global economic stability.
India, which is chairing BRICS this year, is expected to highlight its vision of inclusive growth and greater cooperation among developing economies.
Apart from BRICS members, leaders from partner and outreach countries will also participate in the summit programme.
The list includes Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Uganda Vice-President Jessica Alupo.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is also expected to attend the summit.
Ahead of the summit, Delhi Police and security agencies have launched a major security operation. Thousands of personnel have been deployed across airports, hotels and the Bharat Mandapam venue.
Traffic arrangements and security checks have been strengthened to ensure smooth movement of foreign delegates and visiting dignitaries.
Before the main leaders’ summit, Prime Minister Modi will address the BRICS Business Forum on September 11.
Top business leaders from BRICS countries are expected to participate in discussions on trade, agriculture, investment, digital economy and global supply chains.
Senior executives from companies in China, Russia, Brazil and other member nations are also expected to attend the business meeting.
The 2026 BRICS Summit is being seen as a major opportunity for India to strengthen its role in global diplomacy and showcase New Delhi as a key platform for international cooperation.
