Lucknow: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached a residential plot worth Rs 53.46 lakh in Uttar Pradesh’s Sant Kabir Nagar in a money laundering case involving former madrasa teacher Maulana Shamsul Huda Khan, the agency said.
The 189.75-square-metre plot is located in Khalilabad and has been attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The action follows an investigation into allegations that Khan concealed his British citizenship while continuing to receive salary and other government benefits.
According to the ED, Khan acquired British citizenship on December 19, 2013. The agency alleges that despite becoming a British citizen, he continued to work as an assistant teacher at a government-aided madrasa in Mubarakpur, Azamgarh.
An inquiry by the Uttar Pradesh Minority Welfare and Waqf Department reportedly found that his service between 2007 and 2017 had not been verified. Despite this, Khan was granted voluntary retirement in 2017 and subsequently received pensionary benefits, the agency said.
The ED has alleged that around Rs 53.46 lakh was credited to Khan through salary, pension, General Provident Fund and other allowances.
The agency further alleged that Khan continued using his surrendered Indian passport along with PAN, Aadhaar and voter identity documents for purchasing property in Uttar Pradesh after obtaining British citizenship.
The ED said the funds allegedly received from the state exchequer were no longer available. It therefore attached the property of equivalent value under the PMLA.
The money laundering probe originated from FIRs registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police concerning allegations including cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy. The ED had conducted searches in connection with the case in February 2026.
The agency has also made additional allegations concerning Khan’s alleged links with organisations in Pakistan. These claims form part of the ongoing investigation and have not been established through a final court finding.
The property attachment is provisional and remains subject to proceedings under the PMLA. The investigation is continuing.
