New Delhi: Professor Jason Arday, who became the youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge in 2023, has died after stepping down from his academic position following months of controversy and intense public scrutiny.

UK Conservative politician James Cleverly said that several people at academic institutions may have questions to answer regarding the circumstances surrounding Arday’s situation.

Arday had denied allegations of plagiarism but acknowledged mistakes in some of his academic work. He said the controversy had resulted in an “unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack.”
The controversy began after academic Nathan Cofnas, who described himself as a “race realist” and was removed from his Cambridge role in 2024, alleged that he had found multiple examples of plagiarism in Arday’s work.
Arday said some errors in his earlier academic writing were linked to his autism, explaining that he used mimicry as a way to process and understand information.
The controversy also extended to aspects of Arday’s personal achievements, including claims about running 600 miles in six days and raising millions of pounds for charity.
Arday later clarified that the run was completed over 12 days with rest periods and that the charity funds were raised with assistance from others.
Arday announced his resignation last week, saying the “personal cost” of the ongoing scrutiny had become too high.
He said the criticism went beyond normal academic debate and that the continued accusations, speculation, and public commentary had deeply affected him and his loved ones.
Cambridge University has since announced an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his appointment. Liverpool John Moores University, where Arday completed his PhD in 2015, said it found no evidence that he had committed plagiarism.
The university expressed sadness following the death of Professor Jason Arday and offered condolences to his family.
