A devastating fire broke out at a retirement home in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, killing 16 elderly residents. The incident occurred while the occupants were asleep, causing panic and heavy casualties. Fifteen victims died from severe burns, while one succumbed to suffocation.

Jakarta: Sixteen elderly people died in a devastating fire at a old-age home in North Sulawesi province, Indonesia. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in the Manado area. It is reported that all the elderly residents were asleep in the single-story building when the fire suddenly broke out and quickly spread throughout the premises.
According to the police, a total of 16 people died in the incident. Fifteen of the elderly residents died from burns, while one person died from suffocation. The fire spread so rapidly that many of the elderly residents did not have a chance to escape.

Fortunately, 15 people were rescued during the incident and immediately admitted to a nearby hospital. All the injured are currently receiving treatment under the supervision of doctors. The police have called the families of the deceased to the hospital for identification.
The fire department reported that six fire engines arrived at the scene immediately after receiving the report of the fire. The fire was brought under control after about two hours of strenuous effort. Local residents also assisted the firefighters in the relief and rescue operations.

The police's initial investigation suggests that faulty electrical wiring may have caused the fire. However, officials say that the exact cause of the fire will only be determined after a detailed investigation.
