US President Donald Trump said the temporary permission allowing India to buy Russian oil aims to reduce pressure on global energy markets amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The United States granted India a 30-day window to continue imports as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz threaten supply routes.

Trump Says Russian Oil Relief for India Aims to Ease Global Market Pressure
Washington DC: Amid rising tensions in West Asia and the deteriorating security situation in the Gulf region, the United States has granted India a temporary exemption to purchase Russian oil. Regarding this decision, US President Donald Trump stated that this step was taken to alleviate the growing pressure on the global oil market. He explained that India has been allowed to purchase Russian oil for a limited period to avoid any shortages in oil supply.
During a media interaction, Trump stated that there is no global oil shortage and that the United States possesses sufficient energy resources. He stated that maintaining global market stability is essential under the current circumstances. Trump also indicated that the US may take further steps to maintain stability in the oil market if necessary.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also confirmed this decision, stating that this decision was taken to address the temporary shortage in global oil supply. He stated that this exemption is for a limited period and will help control oil prices in the international market.
The rising tensions in the Gulf region have impacted the sea routes passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This route is considered one of the world's most important oil transportation routes. India imports approximately 40 percent of its total oil from the Middle East, and a large portion of it passes through this route. Therefore, any disruption could impact the global oil market.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that India has been granted a temporary 30-day exemption to purchase Russian oil. This move is a short-term measure to control global oil prices amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
The Indian government maintains that the country's energy security is fully secure. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured that there is no shortage of LPG, LNG, and crude oil. India has diversified its energy import sources over the past few years, reducing dependence on any one sector.
India has rapidly increased its crude oil imports from Russia since 2022. Previously, Russia's share of India's total imports was very small, but now it has increased significantly. According to February data, India purchased approximately 20 percent of its total crude oil imports, or approximately 1.04 million barrels per day, from Russia. This has helped India maintain stability in its energy supply.
