New Delhi: Amidst threats of tariffs on European countries over Greenland and speculation of military action, the United States has taken a major U-turn. US President Donald Trump has softened his stance and decided not to implement the proposed tariffs for now. This is being seen as a more pragmatic and diplomatic shift in Trump's policy.

Decision Changed After WEF Meeting

This decision was made following a bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during the World Economic Forum (WEF). The two leaders' conversation is being described as positive. After the meeting, Trump indicated that he would prioritize cooperation over escalating conflict with Europe.

Decision to Impose Tariffs Postponed

Trump, in a statement on his social media platform, "Truth Social," stated that the tariffs, scheduled to be implemented on February 1st, would not be extended for the time being. He wrote that after a useful and constructive discussion with the NATO Secretary General, a framework for a possible future agreement regarding Greenland and the entire Arctic region has been developed. According to Trump, this framework would be in the interests of both the United States and its allies.

Emphasis on US-NATO Cooperation

The US President made it clear that his goal is not confrontation, but to strengthen security and strategic interests through cooperation. He stated that negotiations on the "Golden Dome" project related to Greenland are ongoing. This process will be led by Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. All officials will report directly to the President.

Denmark Welcomes Decision

Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen welcomed Trump's decision, calling it a positive sign amid US ambitions regarding Greenland. Rasmussen said the day ended in a much better atmosphere than the tense start.

NATO Chief Expresses Confidence

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte assured Trump that US allies will stand firmly with Washington in any crisis. He underscored the allies' commitment, citing NATO's role in Afghanistan after 9/11. Trump appreciated this trust, although he also indicated that recent tensions over Greenland had raised some questions about the allies' commitment.

Distance from military rhetoric

In his Davos speech, Trump also distanced himself from his earlier rhetoric of military control over Greenland. Describing Greenland as crucial to US national security, he said its strategic importance has increased significantly due to growing global competition in the Arctic region. He described it as a "cold and remote place" and said it could play a vital role in world peace and security.
