New Delhi: Elon Musk has pledged to make SpaceX’s satellite-based internet service, Starlink, affordable for Indian consumers, intensifying competition with Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio ahead of the latter’s proposed record-breaking initial public offering (IPO).

Musk’s remarks come at a crucial juncture for Jio Platforms, the digital services arm of Reliance Industries, which is preparing for a public listing targeting a valuation of approximately $106 billion. The proposed IPO is expected to be the largest in India’s history.

In a post on his social media platform X, Musk acknowledged that Starlink would have to offer competitive pricing to gain a foothold in India, where mobile internet data is among the cheapest globally. He argued that consumers would not opt for satellite internet if its costs were prohibitively high.

Musk Makes Affordability Central to Starlink’s India Strategy

Musk said SpaceX would need to keep Starlink’s prices within reach of Indian consumers, noting that an expensive service would struggle to attract subscribers in a market accustomed to low-cost data plans.

He maintained that greater competition would benefit ordinary consumers by expanding their choices, even if it reduced Reliance Jio’s profitability. According to Musk, the entry of another service provider would not threaten Jio’s continued existence but could challenge its position in the market.

India’s low mobile data tariffs present a significant hurdle for satellite broadband providers seeking to build a substantial customer base. Starlink’s ability to offer a commercially viable service at competitive rates will therefore be central to its prospects in the country.

Public Feud With Mukesh Ambani Escalates

The pricing commitment follows a series of pointed social media exchanges in which Musk accused Ambani and the Indian government of delaying Starlink’s commercial entry to protect the interests of established telecom operators.

In one post, Musk sarcastically addressed the Reliance Industries chairman as “Prime Minister Ambani”, questioning whether the billionaire was being allowed to influence the conditions under which Starlink could compete in India.

Musk has argued that satellite internet could extend connectivity to underserved communities, improve educational opportunities for children and help small businesses reach customers beyond their immediate markets. He has also highlighted the potential value of satellite communications during natural disasters, when conventional networks may be disrupted. Reliance Industries has not publicly responded to Musk’s latest allegations.

Government Rejects Allegations of Preferential Treatment

The Centre has denied suggestions that Starlink is facing discriminatory treatment in the approval process. Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has maintained that India does not permit monopolies in any sector and that satellite communication providers must comply with the same regulatory framework.

Starlink, Reliance Jio’s satellite communications venture and Bharti Group-backed Eutelsat OneWeb have secured relevant licences but remain subject to outstanding security clearances and other requirements before commencing commercial operations.

The government has said that the approval framework is fair and non-discriminatory, rejecting claims that regulatory conditions are being selectively applied to impede Starlink’s entry.

The allocation and pricing of satellite spectrum also remain important considerations for the sector, with providers required to satisfy the applicable regulatory and security conditions before launching services.

Jio IPO Raises Stakes in India’s Telecom Market

The dispute comes as Jio Platforms prepares to enter the public markets, placing renewed attention on its valuation, market position and prospects for growth. Reliance Jio transformed India’s telecom industry by introducing low-cost data services and expanding access to mobile internet. Its proposed satellite broadband operations would allow the group to compete in a segment that could serve remote areas and customers beyond the reach of conventional terrestrial networks.

Starlink, meanwhile, is seeking access to one of the world’s largest internet markets, where affordability, regulatory compliance and the ability to serve geographically dispersed customers will shape the commercial outlook for satellite broadband.

Musk’s latest commitment signals that pricing will be a central part of Starlink’s proposed India strategy. However, the company’s commercial launch remains contingent on completing the necessary regulatory and security formalities.

The emerging contest could widen consumer choice in satellite connectivity, although the extent of competition will depend on final approvals, service availability and the prices offered by competing providers.
