Islamabad: Political tensions in Pakistan escalated on Sunday as protests broke out in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the federal government's decision to impose emergency rule in the province, which is governed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Demonstrators took to the streets to oppose federal intervention, raising fears of a fresh confrontation between the central government and the opposition party. According to media reports, protesters gathered in the Bara market area and marched through the streets, declaring that they would resist any attempt to impose Governor's Rule or suspend the elected provincial administration.
The development has intensified an already volatile political situation in Pakistan, where the federal government led by Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif and the PTI have been locked in a prolonged confrontation over Imran Khan's imprisonment and demands for his release.
The federal government's decision has triggered strong opposition among PTI supporters, who view the move as interference in the province's elected government. Protesters have vowed to oppose the emergency measures, signalling the possibility of further demonstrations. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Suhail Afridi had reportedly warned before the announcement that any attempt to impose Governor's Rule, declare a state of emergency or disregard the people's electoral mandate would provoke a strong public response.Afridi also indicated that protesters could change their planned route and march towards Peshawar rather than Swabi if the federal government proceeded with such measures.
The warning reflects the growing tension between the provincial leadership and Islamabad. With PTI supporters taking to the streets, the situation could create additional political and administrative challenges for the federal government.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari approved the emergency measure after receiving the federal government's recommendation, which followed a cabinet decision and advice from Shehbaz Sharif. The decision comes amid an intensifying political dispute between the ruling coalition and PTI. The opposition party has continued to demand the release of Imran Khan who has been in prison since 2023 and remains a prominent figure in Pakistan's opposition politics.
PTI has strongly criticised the federal intervention, arguing that the move undermines its electoral mandate and democratic governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The confrontation has added another layer of uncertainty to Pakistan's political landscape, with questions emerging over the future of the provincial administration and the potential for further public mobilisation.
The developments have also drawn concern from international observers. Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, warned that the suspension of an elected provincial government and the introduction of federal emergency rule could deepen Pakistan's existing crises. In a post on X, Khalilzad cautioned that the decision could become another trigger for instability and violence in the country.
His remarks underline concerns that the dispute could extend beyond a confrontation between political parties and create wider security and governance challenges.
The latest developments come against the backdrop of PTI's sustained campaign for Imran Khan's release. The party has organised protests and threatened further demonstrations, including a march towards Islamabad. Khan's continued imprisonment has remained a major source of political tension, with PTI supporters accusing the federal government of targeting their party and weakening its political position.
The emergency decision in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa now threatens to widen the divide between Islamabad and the provincial leadership. With protests underway and opposition leaders warning of a strong response, Pakistan faces another test of its political stability. The situation remains closely tied to how the federal government handles the provincial administration, the opposition's response and the demands of PTI supporters in the days ahead.
