Shocking Crash Near Jakarta Raises Safety Questions
Jakarta: A devastating train collision near the Indonesian capital Jakarta has left at least 14 people dead and 84 others injured, according to rail operator PT KAI. The crash occurred late Monday in Bekasi, a busy commuter area on the outskirts of the city, when a commuter train was struck by a long-distance passenger train.
Rescue teams worked through the night to pull survivors from heavily damaged coaches. Officials confirmed that at least two passengers remained trapped alive inside the wreckage as emergency crews used cutting tools and heavy equipment to access crushed compartments. Authorities warned that the death toll could still rise as evacuation efforts continue.
Survivors recounted chaotic scenes inside the train moments before the impact. One passenger, 29-year-old Sausan Sarifah, said the collision happened suddenly after a loud warning sound, leaving no time for evacuation. She suffered a broken arm and injuries but survived by being on top of a pile of passengers trapped inside the carriage.
Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) has launched a formal investigation into the incident. Preliminary reports suggest that the commuter train may have been halted after a minor impact at a level crossing before being struck by the incoming long-distance train.
Emergency teams, including the military, fire department, national search and rescue agency, and Red Cross, joined the evacuation efforts. Ambulances lined the site as injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals. Authorities described scenes of confusion and distress as hundreds gathered near the crash site.
Following a visit to injured victims, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced plans to construct a flyover near the accident site to ease congestion and improve safety. He also acknowledged concerns about the maintenance of parts of the national rail network.
Indonesia has faced repeated transport safety challenges, with past accidents highlighting issues in rail infrastructure and maintenance. Officials say improving safety standards remains a priority as investigations continue into the latest tragedy.
