New Delhi: Ibrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said on Tuesday that Iran has the technical capability to enrich uranium up to 90% purity if it faces another attack.

Rezaei made the statement on social media platform X, adding that the issue would also be reviewed in Parliament. Uranium enriched to 90% is widely regarded as weapons-grade material, significantly escalating global concerns over nuclear proliferation risks.

Context of Rising Regional Tensions

The statement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions following earlier claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump that Iranian nuclear facilities were “completely destroyed” during a 12-day conflict involving coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel.

Iran’s nuclear infrastructure reportedly suffered significant damage during the attacks, but questions remain over the status of its enriched uranium stockpile.

Concerns Over Enriched Uranium Stockpile

International attention has focused on Iran’s estimated 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, which remains a critical threshold below weapons-grade level but still highly sensitive.

According to U.S. intelligence assessments, unless this Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) stockpile is either removed or destroyed, the impact on Iran’s nuclear program remains limited.

The uncertainty surrounding this material continues to fuel concerns in global security circles, as it could potentially be further enriched if Iran decides to escalate its nuclear activities.

Global Security Implications

Experts warn that any move toward 90% enrichment would dramatically increase tensions between Iran and Western powers, potentially triggering further diplomatic or military escalation in the already volatile West Asia region.

For now, Iran’s statement is being closely monitored by international agencies as part of ongoing nuclear non-proliferation discussions.
