New Delhi: The Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, conceded that communication between him and the Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been made “very difficult” owing to tensions and the apparent divide between the two leading figures of Iran.
Nevertheless, Pezeshkian stood by Khamenei’s stance and affirmed that in spite of his low public visibility, the Supreme Leader still plays a significant role in giving strength to Iran amid its conflict situation.

Commenting on how he communicated with Mojtaba Khamenei, Pezeshkian noted that it is difficult to reach him right now, but he is important for the nation.
Also, he denied any rumors about possible discord within Iran's ruling elite and stressed that his meetings with Khamenei have been productive. Pezeshkian described the Supreme Leader as a person who reacted with "kindness and logic."
Mojtaba Khamenei has been avoiding public appearances ever since he succeeded his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly assassinated by a joint US-Israeli attack, sparking off the current Middle East crisis.
The non-participation of the Supreme Leader in public functions has raised questions regarding his political relations with other senior leaders, like the president, Pezeshkian.
It has been reported that there have been some differences between the president and the influential armed forces of Iran with regard to decisions on negotiations and the war. It has even been claimed that IRGC has increased its political influence in crucial decision-making processes.
Yet, the Iranian government has not yet confirmed the existence of any such rift in its politics.
The developments come at a time when Iran is facing intense pressure over its military response and diplomatic decisions. While questions remain over the balance of power in Tehran, Pezeshkian’s statement highlights the continued importance of Mojtaba Khamenei in Iran’s political structure.
