Tehran: A fresh confrontation between Iran and the United States has raised concerns about stability in the Middle East after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for a drone strike targeting the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.
According to the IRGC, the operation was carried out in response to American military strikes on several locations in southern Iran earlier on Wednesday. Iranian authorities said areas including Jask, Sirik and Qeshm were targeted before Tehran launched what it described as a retaliatory action against US military assets in the Gulf.
The IRGC stated that the drone strike was conducted during the early hours of the morning and warned that stronger responses could follow if further attacks are carried out against Iranian territory.
The latest escalation comes shortly after the United States launched military operations against Iranian targets following the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump defended the decision to strike, arguing that Washington needed to respond firmly to the incident. American officials described the operation as a measured response to what they called Iranian aggression.
Reports indicated that US forces targeted air defence and radar infrastructure near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Explosions were subsequently reported in several Iranian coastal areas, including Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Sirik and Jask.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would not leave attacks unanswered and stressed that the country's armed forces were prepared to respond to any threat.
Iranian state media also quoted military sources as saying no offensive air operations had been launched by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz during the previous 24 hours. However, officials warned that any renewed hostilities could trigger a decisive response.
The latest exchange has added uncertainty to diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Tehran and Washington. Analysts warn that continued military action could jeopardise fragile ceasefire arrangements and complicate ongoing negotiations.
The situation has also renewed concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, where disruptions could affect international shipping and oil markets.
