New Delhi: Just ahead of potential peace talks between Israel and Lebanon, the situation has deteriorated further. At least 11 people were killed in recent Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon; reports indicate that women and children are among the casualties. This attack has dealt a major blow to hopes for upcoming negotiations between the two nations.

Where and How Did the Attack Occur?

According to Lebanon's state-run agency, simultaneous attacks were carried out at multiple locations. In an attack near the Qasmiyeh area, 15 people were injured. In another attack, one individual died at the scene. The most significant damage resulted from the destruction of a bridge that connected southern Lebanon to the rest of the country. The bridge has been completely destroyed, effectively cutting off the region's connectivity.

What Does Israel Say?

Israel alleges that Hezbollah uses this area to facilitate the movement of its militants and weaponry. For this very reason, the bridge had been targeted in the past as well. In recent days, Israel had also issued warnings to civilians to evacuate the area.

Lebanon's Reaction

Lebanon has termed this attack a "dangerous provocation." The government asserts that such attacks undermine the peace process and endanger the lives of ordinary citizens.

Impact on Peace Talks

Amidst these attacks, reports had emerged regarding potential talks between Benjamin Netanyahu and Joseph Aoun. Donald Trump had claimed possible talks between Israel and Lebanon on Thursday in a post on Truth Social.

However, Lebanon's presidential office was unaware of any upcoming contact with Israel. But Israeli cabinet security member Galia Gamliel then told Israeli Army Radio that the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be speaking to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun today.

However, following these recent events, the prospects for such talks have now become uncertain. According to diplomatic sources, holding high-level negotiations without a ceasefire would be difficult.

Broader Regional Dynamics

The roles of the United States and Iran are also pivotal in this entire affair. The U.S. is striving to advance the dialogue process. Iran seeks to ensure that Lebanon is also included in any major peace settlement. In essence, this has evolved from a bilateral issue involving just two nations into a regional matter encompassing the entire Middle East.

Simply put, hopes for peace appear to be crumbling once again, just as they were beginning to take shape. On one hand, preparations for talks were underway; on the other, an attack has further heightened tensions. All eyes are now fixed on whether or not the two nations will still be able to make it to the negotiating table.
