New Delhi: At least five people were killed in Israeli air strikes and drone attacks across southern Lebanon on Saturday, Lebanese state media reported, only hours after a ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group came into effect.

Israeli launched multiple strikes

According to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA), Israeli warplanes and drones launched multiple strikes overnight and into Saturday morning in the Nabatieh region. Several residential buildings and homes were reportedly destroyed, while Israeli artillery shelled parts of Nabatieh and surrounding areas before dawn.

Attacks came despite a ceasefire

The attacks came despite a ceasefire agreement reached on Friday following a sharp escalation in cross-border hostilities. A US official confirmed that the truce, brokered after intensive diplomatic efforts, was scheduled to take effect at 4 pm local time (1300 GMT) on Friday.

However, the latest strikes have raised fresh concerns over the durability of the truce and the risk of renewed conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military regarding the reported strikes.
