New Delhi: A major terror attack on a military base in the northeastern region of Nigeria was successfully foiled by the army. The attack took place late Wednesday night, when terrorists—heavily armed and equipped with drones—launched a sudden assault, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The Army's Counter-Operation
The Nigerian Army was already on high alert. The moment the attack began, soldiers immediately launched a counter-operation, utilizing air support. In this joint operation, approximately 80 terrorists were neutralized, including several high-ranking commanders.
Use of Drones and Heavy Weaponry
The attackers possessed sophisticated weaponry, including drones, rocket launchers, machine guns, and explosives. This demonstrates that terrorist organizations have now become technologically more advanced than ever before.
Which Groups Are Suspected?
Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) are suspected of being behind this attack. Both organizations have long been spreading terror across Nigeria.
Casualties on the Army's Side
Four soldiers were injured during the engagement and were immediately evacuated for medical treatment. However, the army also recovered a significant cache of weapons, dealing a major blow to the terrorists' operational capabilities.
Previous Attacks
Prior to this incident, 23 people were killed in suicide attacks carried out in Maiduguri. The persistent attacks have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity throughout the region.
Growing Crisis and International Concern
Since the insurgency began in 2009, more than 40,000 people have lost their lives. The situation has become so critical that even the United States has stepped forward to assist Nigeria, offering military advisory support.
Terrorism remains a major crisis in Nigeria. Despite this recent success by the army, the threat has not yet subsided. A sustainable solution to this problem is possible only through the combined efforts of the government and international cooperation.
