After Mayoral Win, Mamdani Declares: “New York’s Story Is Incomplete Without Puerto Rico
New Delhi: Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited Puerto Rico on Thursday after winning the election, where New York politicians and lobbyists gather every year. This annual gathering, known as "Somos," is considered a hub for political strategy, discussion, and interaction.
I'm very happy to be in Somos - Mamdani
Zohran Mamdani received a rousing welcome at the beach reception. The crowd applauded him, and New York Attorney General Letitia James encouraged everyone from the stage to sing "Mamdani, vo-o-o-o," to the tune of the old, famous song "Volere." Addressing the gathering, Zohran Mamdani said, "I'm very happy to be in Somos. You can't tell the story of New York City without the story of Puerto Rico." He also mentioned that he ate the traditional dish, "mofongo," and praised it.
Programs at the conference cover a variety of topics.
The conference will feature programs on topics such as "Workforce Development through Rising Communities" and "Celebrating Human Services." Several legislative workshops will also be held. This conference is typically a post-election opportunity for leaders to relax, interact, and network. Zohran Mamdani, who is only 34 years old, recently announced his transition team. This team includes experienced officials who will help him take over City Hall and implement his "Affordability Agenda."
Mamdani spoke with the current Mayor of New York
Before arriving in Puerto Rico, Zohran Mamdani spoke by phone with the current Mayor of New York, Eric Adams. Eric Adams assured him of his full support. However, Adams himself did not attend the conference. Zohran Mamdani won a landslide victory in Tuesday's election, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani will reportedly return to New York on Saturday.
