Marco Rubio India Visit
New Delhi: Marco Rubio arrived in India on Saturday for a four-day official visit, marking his first trip to the country since taking office. The visit is aimed at strengthening India-US relations, which have faced strain over trade and diplomatic differences in recent months.
The US top diplomat is expected to hold detailed discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his stay.
The Jaishankar and Rubio meeting is scheduled for Sunday, followed by the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday. Officials said discussions will focus on boosting cooperation in energy, trade, investment, critical technologies, and people-to-people exchanges.
The two sides are also likely to address global issues, including the ongoing West Asia crisis and its impact on energy markets and supply chains.
India will host the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 26, bringing together representatives from India, the United States, Australia and Japan. The meeting will be chaired by Jaishankar and attended by foreign ministers from all four countries.
The agenda is expected to include Indo-Pacific security, supply chain resilience, and strengthening strategic coordination among Quad partners.
Rubio’s visit comes at a time when both countries are looking to resolve trade differences, including tariff-related issues and market access concerns. Talks are also expected to explore ways to diversify critical mineral supply chains and expand bilateral trade.
US officials have indicated that stabilising economic ties and deepening strategic cooperation remain key priorities during the visit.
In addition to meetings in New Delhi, Rubio is scheduled to visit Kolkata, Agra, and Jaipur during his India tour. There is also a possibility that he may meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, although no official confirmation has been made.
Rubio has described India as a “great ally and partner,” signalling a positive tone ahead of the high-level diplomatic engagements.
