New Mexico: The social media behemoth, Meta (owner of Instagram and Facebook), received a serious blow in court proceedings when the company was told by a New Mexico court to cough up $567 million in a groundbreaking case where the company is accused of harming minors on its platforms.
This came out of the second phase of a lawsuit looking at issues related to children’s safety and mental wellbeing.
In the state of New Mexico, Judge Bryan Biedscheid ordered that the large amount of penalty be utilized in youth-related programs.
As per some of the sources available, out of the total amount, $420 million will be spent on treatments for youths, whereas the rest of the funds will go into awareness programs, prevention programs, screening programs, and many others in the coming five years.
The decision follows an earlier phase of the trial in which jurors had ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties, finding that the company had allegedly failed to adequately address risks faced by children using its platforms.
In this lawsuit, there was apprehension regarding certain features on Instagram and Facebook that could pose adverse effects on the younger generation.
In the trial process, the prosecution tried to push for more from Meta by imposing better verification procedures, restriction on certain addictive features of the platform and protection from any exploitation of children.
It is noteworthy that certain federal children's privacy laws, such as the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) hindered the process.
The court said imposing certain age-verification requirements only on Meta, while not applying similar rules to other social media platforms, could unfairly impact the company.
The ruling highlighted the complex challenges faced by technology companies in balancing user safety, privacy regulations and platform responsibilities.
The Associated Press reported that authorities and Meta were contacted for comments regarding the court's decision.
The verdict adds to growing global scrutiny on major social media companies over issues related to children's online safety, digital well-being and platform accountability.
As governments and courts continue examining the impact of social media on young users, Meta and other technology giants are facing increasing pressure to strengthen safety measures across their platforms.
