Washington: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race, marking a historic victory for the former public health official who entered politics after training as a doctor.

His victory makes him the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. He won the closely watched election in a key political battleground state, campaigning on universal healthcare, government accountability, and policies aimed at helping ordinary Americans.

The result comes after a divisive Democratic primary in August 2026, when El-Sayed narrowly defeated establishment-backed Congresswoman Haley Stevens. Democrats had been closely watching the Michigan contest as they sought to regain control of the Senate.

Healthcare And Government Accountability At The Centre

El-Sayed's political journey began with a career in medicine. According to his campaign website, he initially trained to become a doctor but later concluded that failures in the political system were contributing to people's health problems.

He subsequently worked in public health and government administration, serving as director of the Wayne County Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services.

His campaign centred on making healthcare accessible to everyone and ensuring that the government served ordinary Americans rather than wealthy individuals and corporations.

"I ran for the US Senate because I believe life in America shouldn't be this hard," El-Sayed said on his campaign website. He added that he would fight to build a government that worked for people rather than "Elon Musk, Donald Trump, or their billionaire friends".

The campaign was also marked by disagreements over US support for Israel and accusations of antisemitism. El-Sayed, a vocal critic of Israel, faced criticism over his response to a March attack on a Michigan synagogue. He later apologised to those who felt his comments were hurtful.

Karnataka Connection Through His Wife

El-Sayed has a connection to coastal Karnataka through his wife, Dr Sarah Jukaku, a psychiatrist whose family traces its roots to Bhatkal.

Sarah is the granddaughter of Jukaku Shamshuddin, who had served as deputy minister for finance in Mysore State under then chief minister BD Jatti.

El-Sayed and Sarah met while studying at the University of Michigan. The couple has two daughters and live in Ann Arbor.

Speaking about his connection with his wife's South Indian family, El-Sayed said in an interview: "Listen, I've been married in a South Indian family for 20 years, like. I'm well inducted now. You know, I might be more Indian than I'm Arab."
