Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the resumption of negotiations between the United States and Iran, urging both sides to return to dialogue and avoid further escalation in the region.

Macron said he held separate conversations with Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian, stressing the need to revive talks that had been suspended earlier.

Call for Ceasefire and De-escalation

During the discussions, Macron emphasised the importance of maintaining a strict ceasefire among all parties involved. He warned that continued tensions could further destabilise an already fragile situation in the region.

He also highlighted the need to resolve misunderstandings that have contributed to the breakdown of negotiations, saying diplomatic engagement remains the only viable path forward.

Focus on Strait of Hormuz

A key concern raised by the French President was the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which has emerged as a major flashpoint.

Macron called for the immediate and unconditional reopening of the vital shipping route, stressing that it should remain free of restrictions or tolls. The waterway is critical for global energy supplies, and disruptions have raised international concerns.

Proposal for Multilateral Effort

France, along with the United Kingdom, plans to host a conference in Paris later this week to address the crisis. The meeting will bring together non-belligerent countries through videoconference to explore ways to support maritime security.

According to Macron, the initiative aims to build a multilateral and defensive framework to ensure safe navigation in the region once conditions stabilise.

Efforts to Prevent Escalation

Macron reiterated that restoring stability requires coordinated international efforts and a commitment from all sides to avoid further confrontation. He said that reopening dialogue channels would be essential for achieving a sustainable resolution.

The renewed diplomatic push comes amid heightened tensions and concerns over the impact of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz on global trade and energy markets.
