Kathmandu: Nepal’s politics has been shaken after former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli was arrested. This happened just a few days after a new government led by Balen Shah came to power. Because the arrest came so soon after the change in government, it has increased political tension and started a big debate across the country.
Oli is reportedly being detained for his alleged role in last year's "Gen-Z" protests, which were marked by widespread violence and resulted in the deaths of over 70 people. The movement began as an anti-corruption movement but quickly escalated into a violent one.

Oli's then-Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, was also arrested along with him. According to Kathmandu police, both were detained this morning and legal proceedings are underway against them.
A recently constituted high-level investigation commission stated in its report that top officials at the time showed serious negligence in handling the situation. The commission held Oli and other officials responsible and recommended strict action. The report suggested a maximum sentence of 10 years.
The new government's Home Minister has clearly stated that this action is not being taken out of revenge, but in accordance with the law. He asserted that "no one is above the law" and that the culprits will be punished at all costs.
Meanwhile, K. P. Oli has described his arrest as political revenge. He said he will legally challenge this decision and continue his fight for justice.
The investigation commission has also recommended action against several other senior officials, including the former chief of the Nepal Police. Consequently, more arrests are likely in the coming days.
