Kathmandu: Nepal is facing one of its worst natural disasters in recent years after devastating flash floods and landslides struck the Nepal-Tibet border region. The death toll has climbed to nearly 392, while more than 1,400 people remain missing as rescue teams continue searching through mud, debris and damaged areas.
The disaster has destroyed homes, bridges and roads, leaving several villages severely affected. Rescue operations are underway, but difficult terrain and the threat of fresh flooding are creating major challenges for authorities.
Experts believe the disaster was caused by a glacial collapse that triggered massive debris flows and sudden flooding. Earlier reports suggested an earthquake-related event, but satellite analysis later indicated that glacier-related activity caused the deadly chain of events.
Authorities have also warned about the possibility of another major flood after temporary lakes formed due to blocked rivers and rising water levels.
India is closely monitoring the situation as several Indian nationals remain missing after the floods. The Ministry of External Affairs said around 290 Indians are still uncontactable, while many others have been rescued.
Indian authorities are coordinating with Nepal and China to assist citizens stranded in affected regions. Several tourists, workers and pilgrims were among those impacted by the disaster.
The flood situation has raised concerns in India, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, as rivers originating from Nepal flow into these states.
Authorities have increased monitoring of rivers including the Gandak, Kosi and Bagmati. Disaster response teams have been placed on alert in vulnerable border districts to handle any emergency situation.
India has sent humanitarian assistance and disaster relief supplies, including essential materials and medicines, to Nepal. Several countries and international organisations have also announced emergency aid as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
