Bangladesh Condemns Lynching Amid Unrest Following Osman Hadi’s Death
Hadi passed away on Thursday in Singapore, where he had been receiving treatment after being shot by unidentified assailants outside a mosque in Dhaka on December 12. The incident sent shockwaves across the country and intensified political tensions.
Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus confirmed Hadi’s death in a televised address to the nation. Soon after the announcement, protests erupted across several parts of the country, with some demonstrations turning violent.
Hadi’s body was flown back from Singapore and arrived in Dhaka on Friday evening. In a post on social media platform X, Muhammad Yunus stated that the funeral prayer would be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, revising the earlier announced time of 2:30 pm.
Authorities have urged attendees to avoid carrying bags or heavy items to the funeral prayer. Additionally, flying drones in and around the Parliament House area has been strictly prohibited for security reasons.
Following the arrival of Hadi’s body, Inqilab Mancha appealed to its supporters to remain disciplined and avoid responding to any instructions or provocations from outside the organisation.
In a statement, the platform said it would bring Hadi’s body to the Dhaka University Central Mosque, calling on students and members of the public to gather peacefully and continue chanting slogans demanding justice. “Do not heed any instructions or provocations from anyone other than the Inqilab Mancha,” the statement read.
