Three Pakistani traffic cops killed in militant gun attack (Img: X)
Islamabad: Three traffic police officers killed and three others injured as gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying police personnel in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday.
The attack took place in Tank district, where gunmen riding motorcycles targeted the police vehicle and fled from the spot.
No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack. However, Pakistani authorities are suspecting Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has carried out several attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The TTP is a separate organisation from Afghanistan’s Taliban but maintains an alliance with it.
The attack came two days after a 'fidayeen' bomb blast in Dera Ismail Khan city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. At least 13 people were killed and more than 30 others were wounded in the suicide bombing. Gunmen also opened fire on an ambulance that arrived at the scene after the explosion. The TTP claimed responsibility for that attack.
The latest violence comes amid continued tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over militant activity along their shared border.
Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan’s Taliban government of allowing TTP militants to operate from Afghan territory and carry out attacks inside Pakistan.
Kabul has denied the allegations and said it does not allow its territory to be used against other countries.
The latest attacks are likely to add to concerns over security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has witnessed repeated militant violence in recent years. Security forces and police personnel have frequently been targeted in attacks across the province.
