Bishkek: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday delivered a strong message on terrorism at the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, saying that terrorism cannot be used as a strategic tool by any country.
Addressing SCO leaders, including Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, PM Modi called for a united global approach against terrorism and urged nations to reject double standards on the issue.
“We must speak with one voice that there can be no room for double standards on this serious issue,” PM Modi said.
He added that countries supporting, sheltering or using terrorists as instruments of policy must receive a clear message that “terrorism cannot be a strategic asset for anyone.”
During his address, PM Modi also highlighted the need for diplomacy to resolve ongoing international conflicts.
Referring to global tensions, including the Iran and Ukraine conflicts, the Prime Minister said that there is no solution on the battlefield and disputes must be settled through dialogue and diplomacy.
The SCO Summit is being held at a time when geopolitical tensions have affected global security, energy supplies and economies across the world.
The summit brought together leaders from 10 SCO member countries along with partner and observer nations to discuss regional security, connectivity, economic cooperation and counter-terrorism efforts.
Besides Modi and Sharif, leaders including Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other Central Asian leaders participated in the discussions.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi held meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
