Kathmandu: Nepal has been in the headlines since the formation of its new government and the implementation of stringent policies. The country’s Prime Minister and Home Minister have been much-talked-about figures in political circles, with many viewing them as being in a straight-out competition to curb corruption more aggressively.

Now another major development has unfolded in Nepali politics. The country's Home Minister, Sudhan Gurung, has resigned from his post. He took this decision after facing allegations of holding shares linked to a controversial businessman.

Allegations of Corruption

Sudhan Gurung who was considered to be a nightmare for corrupts have been stigamtised with the same allegations. He has been accused of investing in companies associated with a businessman who is currently under investigation for money laundering.

Following these revelations, pressure on him to resign intensified. Notably, even some leaders within his own party raised the issue of a "conflict of interest."

Resignation Citing Ethics

In his resignation letter, Sudhan Gurung states that ethics and public trust are far more important for him than the position he holds. He want public life to be transparent and accountable.

He further added that he decided to step down to ensure an impartial investigation and to avoid any potential conflicts.

Resignation Submitted to the Prime Minister

Gurung submitted his resignation to Nepal's Prime Minister, Balendra Shah. He also informed the public of his decision through social media.

Gurung's Stance and Clarification

While offering a clarification regarding the allegations, Sudhan Gurung stated that his total investment exceeds 20 million Nepali Rupees and that all relevant details are available in official records.

He asserted that the shares he holds in the companies in question were acquired before he became a minister, and that he had duly declared them in his asset statements.

Termed the Matter a "Sponsored Rumor"

Gurung described these allegations as a "sponsored rumor." He contended that individuals unsettled by his crackdown on corruption were spreading misinformation against him.

The Real Cause of the Controversy

However, questions were raised against him primarily because specific details regarding certain investments were not clearly disclosed in his public asset declarations. This gave rise to doubts regarding transparency.
