New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi for the 18th BRICS summit has brought his high-security motorcade into the spotlight, with his customised Aurus Senat limousine among the most closely watched vehicles accompanying him.
Unlike many heads of state who may rely on host-country transport during overseas visits, Putin typically travels with his own heavily armoured presidential vehicle. The Senat is designed to provide protection as well as the luxury expected of a state limousine. The vehicle has previously attracted attention in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen travelling with Putin in the same model during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in China.
The Aurus Senat is a full-size luxury limousine developed under Russia’s Kortezh programme, an initiative aimed at creating a domestic fleet of high-end vehicles for senior government officials. The model was unveiled in 2018 and draws design inspiration from historic Soviet state limousines, including the ZIS-110. A civilian version of the Senat is also produced, although in limited numbers. According to the specifications cited for the model, its civilian variant has been priced at around 18 million rubles or approximately ₹2.5 crore, depending on exchange rates.
Putin’s presidential version, however, is substantially different from the civilian model because of its extensive security modifications.
The Senat is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 combined with a hybrid system. The powertrain is reported to generate approximately 598 horsepower and 880 Nm of torque, with power delivered through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Despite its considerable size and armour, the limousine is engineered to provide the performance required for a presidential motorcade.
The car measures around 5,630 mm in length, 2,000 mm in width and 1,700 mm in height, while its wheelbase stretches to approximately 3,300 mm. Its reported top speed is around 160 kmph, with a claimed 0-100 kmph acceleration time of roughly nine seconds.
Security is the defining feature of Putin’s presidential Senat. The heavily protected limousine is designed to withstand serious threats and is described as bulletproof and blast-resistant. Many details of its protective systems remain confidential, reflecting the security requirements surrounding the Russian president.
The vehicle is also equipped with modern driver-assistance and safety technologies, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, electronic traction control and advanced braking systems. The Senat is engineered to operate across extreme climatic conditions, an important requirement for a presidential vehicle expected to travel through diverse environments.
While the exterior prioritises protection, the cabin combines presidential security requirements with luxury. The interior features premium leather, wood detailing and advanced infotainment technology. The spacious cabin is designed around comfort and functionality rather than simply serving as a conventional luxury-car interior. The extensive armour and security equipment also make the presidential version considerably different from an ordinary luxury limousine.
A presidential vehicle is more than a mode of transport. For a leader travelling internationally, it forms an important part of the wider security architecture surrounding the visit. Putin’s overseas motorcade can include numerous vehicles, while his personal limousine is transported as part of the wider security arrangement.
The Aurus Senat has consequently become an international symbol of the Russian president’s tightly controlled security protocol and its appearance on Delhi roads is likely to draw as much attention as the diplomatic engagements surrounding his visit.
The Senat replaced the Mercedes-Benz vehicles that had long been associated with Russian presidential transport and became a prominent symbol of Moscow’s push to develop a domestic luxury automobile industry. Today, the armoured limousine is closely identified with Putin himself.
As the Russian president moves through New Delhi during his BRICS visit, the Aurus Senat offers a rare glimpse into the extraordinary level of security and engineering that accompanies one of the world's most closely guarded leaders.
