Rs 18 Lakh Fine On Late Deposit of Book: A Man Returned Book After 150 Years At An Australian Library

Kiama: An interesting incident has taken place in a public library in Australia. A book has been returned around 150 years after the due date, with water damage from years of being bricked into a fireplace. The library has charged a late fine of thousands of Australian dollars. The library says it has no way to figure out who last borrowed the book, which was found during a recent home renovation.
The book was published in 1858 and covers Greek antiquities and was returned to a library in the coastal town of Kiama last week by a resident named Ross Simmons.
Simmons found the book inside a tea crate bricked into a sealed fireplace during the renovation of his home. The library staff told told to press that "We've never had anything that old come back to us."
The librarian further said, "I follow lots of libraries on social media, and often you'll get things that are maybe 30 or 40 years old when they're cleaning out estates and stuff like that."
Simmons also said that it may be his great-great-grandfather, John Simmons, who borrowed the book, who once onwed the house where the book was found.
He said, "I'm making an assumption. He was in residence in the cottage around about that time, and his children were probably too young."
The library was established in 1872, and the book, titled “Antiquities of Athens,” was marked as No. 506 in its library’s original collection of around 1,000 books. Hudson assumes it went missing within a few years of the library’s opening.
The library has charged a late fine of around 28,000 Australian dollars, which is around Rs 18.76 lakh. The fine has been calculated on the basis of the British three pence a week overdue fee that was printed on the inside cover of the book, as well as a series of rules applicable when the library first opened.
