Ukraine to legalise porn for sustaining war against Russia (Google)
Desperate situations call for desperate measures. Sample this. Ukraine is in the process to legalise its pornography industry. The reason? To meet the finances needed to continue the war against Russia. Ukraine is planning to introduce formal tax system for generating additional revenue. Currently pornographic production, distribution and possession are illegal in Ukraine and can invite a prison sentence of up to seven years.
Current Status
Yaroslav Zhelezniak, Ukrainian opposition leader who heads the Parliament’s finance committee is pushing to legalise pornography. A bill co-authored by him has already got its first vote in Ukranian Parliament in July and is awaiting a second reading.
“People were effectively being forced to choose between not paying taxes and facing tax-related criminal charges, or paying taxes and potentially admitting to activity prohibited by Ukraine’s pornography laws,” said Zhelezniak.
The issue became more prominent after Ukrainian tax authorities obtained information from Fenix International, the UK-based parent company of OnlyFans. According to figures cited in the report, 7,900 Ukrainians earned more than $131 million from OnlyFans in 2023. That created millions of dollars in potential tax liabilities.
Pornography, an Offence
The production, distribution and possession of pornography is illegal in Ukraine and carries a prison sentence of up to seven years. However, authorities have not been able to control what has become a large and profitable industry.
Due to pornography prohibition, several Ukrainian adult content creators have moved outside the country to continue their work legally. Some of them have relocated to countries including Georgia, while others operate from different locations across Europe. Those in Ukraine have also found ways to continue working despite the restrictions.
As of now, the bill remains under consideration in Ukrainian Parliament. The lawmakers of Ukraine will decide whether to move ahead with legalising and regulating an industry that has long operated in the shadows.
