Islamabad: Floods and rain are causing a major disaster in Pakistan. In addition to causing extensive damage the floods are thought to have killed over 1000 people. The situation is of great concern according to Ikhtiar Wali Khan the Information Coordinator for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) affairs. He claimed that the recent unexpected floods in KP province may have claimed the lives of close to 1000 people.
Wali Khan saw extensive damage when he personally visited the flood-affected areas. He talked about how entire villages were destroyed. There was significant damage in Buners Chagharzi neighborhood. The village of Bashoni is no longer visible on the map.'

Although about 600 bodies have been found so far many more victims are still unaccounted for. He proposed that more than 1000 people might have died in the Dir district alone. More than 1000 people are still missing according to reports. Since June 26 at least 657 people—including 392 men 171 children and 94 women—have lost their lives in rain-related incidents throughout Pakistan according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). With 288 men 59 children and 43 women among the 390 fatalities and 245 injuries Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been the most affected state.

The UN offers support and sympathy. In the meantime UN Secretary-General António Guterres conveyed his profound sadness over the devastating death toll from the floods. He expressed his sympathies to the victims families and solidarity with everyone impacted. UN teams are collaborating with governments to deliver essential assistance according to a statement from UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
In Pakistans flood-affected areas rescue and relief efforts are still ongoing and the situation is still dire. One of the worst natural disasters to hit the nation in recent memory is currently plaguing it.
