Seoul/Tokyo: South Korea and Japan have renewed their commitment to closer defence cooperation in response to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile capabilities. The two countries also agreed to explore collaboration in emerging military technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and unmanned systems.
According to South Korea’s Defence Ministry, Vice Defence Minister Lee Doo-hee met his Japanese counterpart, Atsushi Ando, during a two-day visit to Tokyo that began on Thursday. Lee also paid a courtesy visit to Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.
During their discussions, Lee and Ando stressed the need for stronger coordination between Seoul and Tokyo, alongside cooperation with Washington, as security challenges on the Korean Peninsula continue to evolve. The officials highlighted the importance of maintaining close communication amid growing regional uncertainties and North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. Their discussions reflect continuing efforts by the three US-aligned partners to strengthen security coordination across East Asia.
Beyond immediate security concerns, the two sides agreed to promote defence exchanges and cooperation in advanced scientific and technological fields. Artificial intelligence and unmanned systems were identified as important areas for future collaboration, signalling an interest in modernising defence capabilities and expanding technological partnerships.
The agreement also builds on previous discussions aimed at developing stable, mutually beneficial defence relations based on trust and communication.
Last month, senior defence representatives from South Korea and Japan reiterated that trilateral cooperation with the United States remains essential for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the wider region. The latest Tokyo meeting continues that diplomatic and defence engagement, with all three countries seeking closer coordination against shared security challenges.
However, historical tensions between Seoul and Tokyo remain a sensitive backdrop to bilateral relations. Disagreements over Japan’s wartime legacy have previously drawn criticism from South Korea and other neighbouring countries. Despite these differences, the latest talks underscore the strategic importance both governments attach to regional security and defence cooperation.
