US-Iran Conflict Escalates (Img: Internet)
New Delhi: Fresh tensions erupted between the United States and Iran after American forces carried out so-called “defensive strikes” against an Iranian military installation on Wednesday. US officials say forces assigned to the US Central Command have shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones in the area of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The drones were deemed a direct threat to US assets operating in the region, officials familiar with the operation said. Following the interceptions, US forces reportedly attacked a drone ground control station in Bandar Abbas. The site was said to have been preparing to launch a fifth drone at the time of the attack.
The latest military exchange followed comments by US President Donald Trump that Iran was “negotiating on fumes” and that Washington would not soften its stance despite mounting political pressure ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump also said his administration would not rush into any diplomatic deal to appease markets or defuse tensions. The war, which has been going on for almost three months, has already impacted global trade sentiment and fuelled concerns about energy supply disruptions from instability around the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route.
In response to the American operation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had launched a strike on a US airbase at around 4:50 am local time. Iranian authorities claimed the attack was retaliation for what they described as a US assault near Bandar Abbas airport earlier in the day.
The IRGC did not disclose the exact location of the targeted airbase but warned that any additional military action by the United States would invite a “more decisive” response. The latest developments have intensified fears of a broader confrontation in the Gulf region as both sides continue to exchange threats and military actions.
