"Bring me back home": Viral video highlights migrant worker concerns
Kuwait City: A desperate plea for help from a Tamil Nadu woman working in Kuwait has triggered a rescue effort after her emotional video alleging torture and unpaid wages went viral on social media.
The woman, identified as Vanitha from Kallakurichi district, was seen in the video appealing to the district administration and police to bring her back to India. She claimed that she was facing severe difficulties while working as a domestic helper and had not received her salary for the past two months.
The video, in which Vanitha is seen covering her head with a scarf and requesting urgent assistance, drew attention from authorities in Tamil Nadu, who moved to verify her identity and coordinate further action.
According to officials, Vanitha travelled to Kuwait around three months ago after securing employment as a domestic worker. However, she allegedly faced harsh conditions after reaching the country.
In the video message, she sought help from the Kallakurichi Collector and Superintendent of Police, expressing her desire to return home. Her appeal highlighted concerns over the safety and welfare of Indian workers employed abroad, especially those dependent on private recruitment agents.
The incident has renewed discussions around overseas employment risks, including exploitation, wage disputes and lack of support for migrant workers.
After the video surfaced, Vanitha’s family approached authorities seeking immediate intervention. Her mother, Vennila, alleged that an agent who arranged her daughter’s overseas job had misled the family about the working conditions in Kuwait.
She said Vanitha had travelled abroad hoping to earn a livelihood and support her children but allegedly faced difficulties after arrival. The family has urged officials to ensure her safe return and take necessary action against those responsible if any wrongdoing is established.
Kallakurichi Superintendent of Police Shahnaz confirmed that officials had verified Vanitha’s identity and contacted her family. Authorities have received a complaint from the family and are coordinating with relevant agencies to explore steps for her rescue and repatriation.
Officials are expected to examine details related to her employment, recruitment process and the circumstances in which she is currently staying in Kuwait.
Vanitha’s case has once again brought attention to challenges faced by Indian migrant workers, particularly domestic helpers working in foreign countries.
Many workers depend on agents for overseas employment opportunities and often face issues related to contracts, salary payments, working conditions and access to legal assistance. Experts have repeatedly stressed the need for stricter monitoring of overseas recruitment agencies to prevent exploitation of vulnerable workers.
