Washington: US President Donald Trump has once again intensified the controversy surrounding the Strait of Hormuz after sharing an image on social media that described the strategic waterway as “ new US territory.” The move has drawn a sharp reaction from Iran and added fresh uncertainty to an already tense situation in the Middle East.

Trump shared the image on his Truth Social account with the message: “New U.S. Territory. Strait of Hormuz.” This is not the first time the US President has made such a claim. Earlier, during an event on Long Island on August 14, Trump had said that the Strait of Hormuz could soon be declared a US territory.

Trump’s Focus on Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, through which a significant portion of global crude oil supplies passes every day. Any disruption in this waterway can have a major impact on international energy markets and supply chains.

The Trump administration has repeatedly demanded that Iran reopen the route, accusing Tehran of disrupting global shipping. Iran, however, has maintained that the waterway remains under its control and has rejected Trump’s statements.

Iran Warns Against US Claims

Iran has strongly criticized Trump’s remarks, calling them unrealistic and a challenge to regional stability.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei said that the difference between Washington’s claims and its actual ability to control the Strait of Hormuz reflects the changing power dynamics in the Persian Gulf.

Iranian officials have also warned that any attempt to seize control of the waterway could have serious consequences.

Iran-Oman Deal Over Safe Shipping Route

Amid the rising tensions, Iran has reached an agreement with Oman regarding a safe route for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has said that complete security in the region can only return after the US lifts sanctions and ends what it describes as a naval blockade.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said that regional instability was created by US actions and called for diplomatic solutions.

Trump Issues Warning Over Oman Deal

Trump has also criticized Oman’s engagement with Iran and warned against any move that could undermine US pressure on Tehran. He reportedly threatened military action if Oman interfered with US objectives.

Oman has not issued a response to Trump’s warning so far.

Global Concerns Over Oil Supply

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical point for global energy security. Any escalation between the US and Iran could affect oil prices, shipping routes, and international markets.

With both sides refusing to back down, the latest dispute over the strategic waterway has emerged as a major geopolitical flashpoint.
