New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has reportedly warned Oman, a key US ally, against interfering with Washington’s efforts to negotiate with Iran over reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

According to a report by Fox News, Trump made the remarks during a phone interview, warning that the US could take military action if Oman obstructs his administration’s talks with Tehran.

The statement comes as both the United States and Oman are separately engaged in diplomatic efforts with Iran to restore shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route that has remained largely blocked for nearly six months amid the US-Iran conflict.

Iran-Oman Talks Near Agreement on Strait Reopening

Earlier, Iranian officials said they were close to finalising an agreement with Oman regarding the reopening of the waterway.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said that both sides had reached an understanding on the transit route map and would finalise remaining details before issuing a joint statement.

Oman has maintained a neutral position in the conflict and has played a key mediating role between Tehran and Washington.

Why Strait of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. Around one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments usually pass through this narrow waterway.

Since US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Tehran has restricted movement through the Strait, making its reopening a major priority for international markets and governments.

Trump Rejects MoU Extension With Iran

Trump also indicated that he was not seeking an extension of the 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the US and Iran, which was aimed at reducing tensions and reopening the Strait.

When asked whether he wanted to extend the agreement, Trump reportedly said, “No.”

The MoU, signed on June 18, was intended to establish a ceasefire framework, but the arrangement collapsed after both sides resumed attacks.

Trump Claims Backchannel With IRGC; Iran Denies

During the Fox News interview, Trump claimed that the US had a direct communication channel with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

However, an IRGC spokesperson rejected the claim, calling it false and saying no such talks were taking place between the two sides.

Iran Demands Compensation for Hormuz Reopening

Iranian officials have previously said that a complete reopening of the Strait would depend on compensation from the US over what Tehran described as violations of the agreement.

Reports suggest Iran has sought additional charges on cargo vessels passing through the Strait as part of the negotiations.

Trump has maintained that his primary objective remains preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, stating that the US will not allow Tehran to acquire nuclear capability "in any way, shape, or form."
