Kampala: At least 63 people were killed and many others injured in a horrific road accident in Uganda early this morning.
The accident occurred near Kitaleba village on the Kampala-Gulu highway at 12:15 am. According to Ugandan police, two buses, a truck, and a car collided violently.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of a bus traveling from Kampala to Gulu attempted to overtake a truck in front of him.
At the same time, another bus traveling from the opposite direction was also trying to overtake a car, causing the four vehicles to collide.
Police stated that a rescue operation was immediately launched at the scene. The injured were admitted to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby medical centers. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the crematorium for post-mortem examination and identification.
Police spokesman SP Kananura Michael said the investigation is ongoing and drivers have been strictly warned to exercise caution on the road.
He added that dangerous and reckless overtaking remains a major cause of road accidents. Police expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
