New Delhi: A fresh controversy has erupted in India over the latest world map released by the United Nations (UN), after the map showed separate Indian and Chinese claim lines for Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin. The development comes shortly after India supported a UN resolution aimed at promoting fair and balanced representation of countries and land masses on global maps.
The UN released the updated world map on July 1, 2026, as part of its cartographic representation initiative. However, the depiction of disputed regions has triggered concerns in India.
What is the controversy
According to the map, the southern boundary of Arunachal Pradesh with Assam has been marked as a ‘Chinese Line’, while the boundary with Nagaland does not appear. At the same time, the northern boundary of Arunachal Pradesh adjoining China's Tibet region has been shown as an ‘Indian Line’.
Depiction of Aksai Chin
A similar pattern has been seen in the depiction of Aksai Chin. The map marks the eastern boundary of the region as an ‘Indian Line’ and shows another ‘Chinese Line’ separating Ladakh from Aksai Chin. India considers Aksai Chin as an integral part of Ladakh, while the area is currently under Chinese control.
Depiction of J&K
The map also shows Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) with a dotted line indicating the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan. A note accompanying the map states that the dotted line represents the approximate LoC agreed upon by both countries and that the final status of J&K remains unresolved.
However, no such explanatory note has been included for the separate Indian and Chinese claim lines displayed for Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin, raising questions over the way territorial disputes have been presented.
Decoding timeline
The timing of the release has also drawn attention, as India had supported the UN initiative on improving global map representation while maintaining that such support does not mean acceptance of any particular territorial depiction.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has repeatedly stated that J&K and Ladakh should be represented according to India's official map, and that any inaccurate or misleading portrayal of Indian territory would not be acceptable.
Latest UN map has once again brought the issue of disputed boundaries into focus, highlighting the challenges faced by international bodies while attempting to represent competing territorial claims on global platforms.
