Washington: The United States is moving toward imposing what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described as the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran, as Washington increases economic pressure on Tehran amid growing tensions between the two nations.

Bessent said the proposed measures could be strong enough to avoid the need for another large-scale military action against Iran. According to him, the strategy focuses on expanding economic restrictions and intensifying pressure through sanctions already targeting the Iranian economy.

US President Donald Trump has also warned of a policy of “economic warfare and isolation” against Iran. He said countries, companies, and institutions supporting Tehran could face serious economic consequences from Washington.

Iran Accuses US of Economic Terrorism

Iran has strongly criticised the planned sanctions, calling them a form of economic pressure aimed at weakening the country. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said such measures could impact ordinary citizens and create wider challenges for the global economy.

Iran has remained under various US sanctions for decades, with major restrictions beginning after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and expanding over issues including nuclear activities and regional policies.

Oil Markets React to Hormuz Concerns

Global oil prices witnessed an increase following Washington’s latest warnings, as markets remained concerned about possible disruptions in energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a major point of tension. The strategic waterway is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, and any prolonged disruption could affect international energy markets and fuel prices.

China Under Pressure Over Iran Trade

Bessent also warned countries continuing commercial relations with Iran that they may face possible US action. China, one of the biggest buyers of Iranian crude oil, could come under increased scrutiny due to its energy trade with Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iran has been holding discussions with Oman to explore arrangements related to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite rising threats from both sides, diplomatic efforts continue to prevent further escalation.
