New Delhi: One Indian national remains missing while 10 others have been rescued following an attack on the commercial vessel GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman, amid a fresh escalation in the US-Iran conflict.
India strongly condemned the attack and said its embassy in Oman was coordinating with local authorities in the ongoing search-and-rescue operation. The vessel had 11 Indian nationals on board when it was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz.
The Ministry of External Affairs expressed concern over repeated attacks on commercial shipping and called for an immediate reduction in tensions.
New Delhi stressed that civilian infrastructure and merchant vessels must not be targeted. It also urged all sides to restore free and uninterrupted navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law.
The Cyprus-flagged container ship reportedly suffered a fire and significant damage to its engine room, leaving it unable to continue its journey. US Central Command said a civilian crew member was missing after the incident.
The crew was forced to abandon the vessel, while maritime authorities and Omani agencies launched rescue efforts in the area.
The incident came amid renewed fighting between Washington and Tehran. The US said it carried out strikes on around 140 Iranian military targets after accusing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of attacking the commercial vessel.

The targeted sites reportedly included missile and drone facilities, naval assets, ammunition storage areas and coastal surveillance infrastructure. Iran, meanwhile, claimed it had closed the Strait of Hormuz and launched retaliatory attacks against US-linked facilities across the Gulf region.
The Indian Embassy in Oman is monitoring the situation and remains in contact with the rescued crew members and Omani authorities. The search for the missing Indian national is continuing.
