US Enforces Blockade on Iranian Ports
Washington/Tehran: Amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, the United States has taken a major step, announcing the imposition of a maritime blockade on Iranian ports. This decision was taken after the failure of high-level talks in Islamabad, raising regional and global concerns.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), entry and exit to Iranian ports will be blocked for all ships from April 13th. The blockade will take effect at 7:30 pm Indian time. The move is stated to maintain security in the region and control Iran's activities.
The blockade will extend to Iranian ports located in the Arabian Sea, the Arabian Gulf, and the Gulf of Oman. Although the US has clarified that ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz bound for non-Iranian ports will not be stopped. Despite this, there is a possibility of increased tension in this strategic waterway.
US President Donald Trump said that Iran is "misusing sea lanes to exert global pressure." He alleged that Iran has impacted international trade by planting landmines in the Strait. Trump also stated that the US Navy will begin removing these mines.
Iran has protested this decision, calling it a step that derails peace talks. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said that the two countries were very close to an agreement, but "excessive demands and the blockade" stalled the process. He warned that hostility will be met with hostility.
Experts believe that this blockade could directly impact global oil supplies and shipping. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy routes, and any tension there could trigger a spike in crude oil prices.
The US Navy has advised civilian vessels to follow official instructions and seek safe passage. The coming days will be crucial to see whether this conflict escalates or diplomatic efforts lead to a resolution.
