New Delhi/Caracas: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed grief over the devastation caused by earthquakes in Venezuela and said India was ready to extend assistance as rescue operations continued.
In a message posted on X, Modi said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage caused by the tremors. On behalf of the people of India, he extended condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, particularly the families who lost their loved ones. The Prime Minister also prayed for the recovery of the injured and said India stood with those impacted during the crisis.
Venezuela was jolted on Wednesday evening by two strong earthquakes that struck in succession shortly after 6 pm local time. Authorities said the quakes measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, causing damage across several states and triggering panic in populated areas.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency after reviewing the destruction. She said the casualty numbers could rise as emergency teams continued searching through damaged buildings and neighbourhoods affected by debris and disrupted services.
At least 32 people have been reported dead and around 700 others injured in the disaster. Rescue workers are focusing on areas where buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage. Hospitals and emergency services are treating the injured, while local authorities are assessing damage to homes, roads and public facilities.
Officials have urged citizens to remain alert for aftershocks and follow safety instructions. Several families have moved to open spaces and shelters as fear persists over further tremors.
The earthquakes have prompted concern from several countries, along with offers of humanitarian help and rescue support. India’s statement signals New Delhi’s readiness to assist Venezuela if a formal request is made.
The disaster has added pressure on Venezuelan authorities, who are racing to restore services and reach survivors. For thousands of affected families, the immediate priority remains rescue, medical aid, shelter and relief supplies.
