New Delhi: Tensions continued to escalate across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Tuesday after the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) alleged that Pakistani security forces opened live fire and used tear gas against unarmed civilians during protests in the Bagh district.

The allegations come amid reports of an intensifying crackdown on demonstrators across the region.

JAAC Alleges Use of Live Fire and Tear Gas

In a statement shared on social media, JAAC claimed that Pakistani security personnel fired live rounds and deployed tear gas to disperse protesters in Bagh. The organisation also alleged that security forces set civilians' motorcycles on fire in the Makri area of Muzaffarabad district.

JAAC urged the United Nations, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), international media organisations and global human rights bodies to closely monitor the situation and push for an independent investigation into the alleged use of force against civilians.

Claims Surface Amid Ongoing Protest Crackdown

The latest allegations follow days of unrest across PoK, where protests have intensified over various local issues. According to JAAC, more than 50 people have been killed and hundreds injured during the recent violence, though these figures have not been independently verified.

Authorities in Pakistan have not immediately issued an official response to the latest allegations.

Amnesty International Calls for Independent Investigation

International human rights organisation Amnesty International has also expressed concern over reports of force being used against protesters. The organisation called on Pakistani authorities to launch a prompt, independent and transparent investigation into the conduct of security forces.

Amnesty further said that internet and mobile service restrictions in parts of PoK could hamper efforts to independently verify developments on the ground and urged authorities to ensure transparency.

International Scrutiny Grows

As allegations of excessive force continue to emerge, pressure is mounting on Pakistan to allow independent monitoring of the situation. Calls for accountability have grown louder, with rights organisations seeking an impartial inquiry into the reported incidents and urging the protection of civilians amid the ongoing unrest.
