New Delhi: The farewell ceremony for Iran’s former Supreme Leader witnessed deeply emotional moments in Tehran, as senior officials Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were seen struggling to hold back tears. The gathering drew thousands of mourners paying final respects in a highly charged atmosphere.
The event is being described as one of the most emotionally significant public ceremonies in recent Iranian history.
Authorities implemented extensive security arrangements across the venue, placing the site under the highest alert level. Officials instructed attendees to enter only after gates opened in the morning, aiming to manage the massive crowds and ensure orderly proceedings.
Security personnel were deployed across key areas as large numbers of people gathered from across the country.
The ceremony was attended by senior Iranian leadership along with international delegations from several countries. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was among those present, alongside representatives from Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
India was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain. Delegations from Russia, Pakistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Iraq and other nations also took part in the ceremony, reflecting its international significance.
Officials estimate that millions of mourners may participate in the extended farewell ceremonies taking place over several days. The body is expected to lie in state before a funeral procession across Tehran, followed by ceremonies in other cities.
Authorities have described the farewell as one of the largest public gatherings in Iran in recent years, with people traveling from across the country and abroad to attend. The multi-city events are expected to continue until the final burial rites are completed.
