Kathmandu: A new and influential name has emerged amidst the current political upheaval in Nepal—Kulman Ghising. Ghising is a civil engineer and public policy advisor by profession, but he got real recognition due to ending the power crisis (load shedding) in Nepal. Among the general public, he is seen as an honest and result-oriented officer.
Learned from India, applied in Nepal
Kulman Ghising was born on 25 November 1970 in Rameshhap, Nepal. After completing his initial education from there, he reached the city of Jamshedpur in India, where he obtained a degree in electrical engineering from the Regional Institute of Technology (now NIT Jamshedpur).

End of power crisis and popularity
Kulman Ghising served two terms as Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA)—
First term: 2016–2020
Second term: 2021–2025 (although removed before completion of term in March 2025)
His biggest achievement was ending load shedding from Nepal, which was once one of the biggest problems of the common people.
He streamlined power generation, transmission, and distribution, stopped power theft and wastage, balanced power import-export with India, ensured regular supply of electricity to the homes of common people. This work established him as a hero of Nepal.
Also involved in controversies
However, he was prematurely removed from NEA in March 2025. Several allegations were leveled against him:
- Not submitting performance reports on time
- Not taking necessary approvals in power agreements with India
- Ignoring government orders
- Obstructing board decisions
