Washington: In a tightly contested 50-49 vote, the US Senate has confirmed Todd Blanche, former personal attorney to President Donald Trump, as the nation's top law enforcement officer. The confirmation brings an end to months of intense debate and standoff between Senate Republicans and the White House.
The confirmation saw strict party-line division from Senate Democrats, all of whom opposed the nomination. Resistance also emerged within the GOP, as Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against Blanche's appointment.
The deciding vote ultimately rested with Senator Bill Cassidy. Despite a history of friction with President Trump—including voting to convict him during his 2021 impeachment trial—Cassidy backed the nominee, stating he believed Blanche was the strongest candidate the administration would offer. Cassidy noted that full Senate confirmation would grant Blanche "greater leverage" within the Justice Department, particularly regarding efforts to combat violent crime.
Blanche’s nomination faced friction during confirmation hearings over his previous administrative actions. Lawmakers heavily scrutinized his handling of released Jeffrey Epstein documents as well as his involvement in setting up a proposed $1.8 billion "anti-weaponisation" fund.
The planned fund was intended to compensate individuals claiming government persecution. However, critics—including Senator Murkowski—expressed deep concern that the money could be directed toward individuals prosecuted in connection with the January 6 Capitol attack. While Blanche promised during hearings to step back from the fund following pushback, questions remain among lawmakers regarding whether those commitments are legally binding.
Todd Blanche is a prominent attorney who previously served as President Donald Trump's personal defense lawyer. Prior to his cabinet confirmation, he held the position of Deputy Attorney General before stepping in as Acting Attorney General following the departure of Pam Bondi. His transition from the President's personal legal team to the head of the Department of Justice has drawn both strong support from administration allies and heavy scrutiny from critics concerning the independence of the agency.
