Speaker Om Birla forms panel to probe allegations against Justice Varma
New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced that a three-member panel to investigate allegations against High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma. In March this year a large sum of burned and partially burned cash was found after firefighters fought a blaze at his official residence.
The fire broke out at Yashwant Varma's residence on March 14, when he was a Delhi high court judge.

The 3-members panel includes Justice Aravind Kumar of the Supreme Court, Madras High Court Chief justice Maninder Mohan and Senior Advocate BV Acharaya as announced by the Lok Sabha Speaker.
The Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has announced the committee after he accepted the motion signed by 146 MPs for impeachment of Justice Yashwant Verma.
Shrivastava Justice Manindra Mohan
A native of Bilaspur Chhattisgarh Justice Shrivastava earned a gold medal for his science degree and then went on to study law. Began practicing law in 1987 and was appointed to the Chhattisgarh High Courts judge in 2009. Served as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court since July 2025 after being appointed Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court in 2021.
Justice Aravind Kumar
Bengaluru native Justice Kumar was involved in politics while still a student. Began practicing law in 1987 and was appointed a Karnataka High Court judge in 2009. Appointed in 2023 to the Supreme Court.
BV Acharya
Acharya who is 88 years old has been a well-known senior Karnataka advocate since 1957. He served as both the special public prosecutor in the case against Jayalalithaa for disproportionate assets and the Karnataka Advocate General.
After looking into the accusations made against Justice Varma the committee will report back to the speaker of the Lok Sabha. If the committee determines that the accusations are accurate Parliament may begin the process of impeaching Justice Varma. This is a significant issue that pertains to judges accountability and the judiciarys independence. The committees report which has the potential to establish a new benchmark for judicial transparency will be closely watched by the entire nation.
