New Delhi: Janmashtami celebrations are incomplete without the traditional offering of Panchamrit, a sacred drink prepared as prasad in many households and temples. While Panchamrit holds deep religious significance, nutrition experts also highlight its nutritional value due to the combination of five natural ingredients — milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar.
The word Panchamrit is derived from two Sanskrit words Panch meaning five and Amrit meaning nectar. Often referred to as the “nectar of gods”, this traditional preparation is believed to nourish the body along with symbolising devotion and purity.
The natural sugars present in honey and sugar provide instant energy. The combination of dairy ingredients also adds essential nutrients, making Panchamrit a refreshing drink during festive occasions.
Milk and curd are rich sources of calcium and protein, which help support bone health and muscle strength. Ghee also adds healthy fats that contribute to overall nourishment.
According to nutritionist Lovneet Batra, Panchamrit can act as a nourishing drink that supports mental well-being. Ingredients like milk and ghee are traditionally associated with cognitive health.
The nutrients present in dairy products, along with the antioxidant properties of honey, may help support healthy skin and hair as part of a balanced diet.
Honey contains natural antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress. These compounds support the body's natural defence system.
Curd contains probiotics that are beneficial for gut health. Regular consumption of probiotic-rich foods can help maintain a healthy digestive system.
The combination of carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats makes Panchamrit a nutrient-rich traditional drink that can contribute to overall wellness when consumed in moderation.
Beyond its health aspects, Panchamrit remains an important part of Indian culture and spirituality. It is offered as prasad during Janmashtami celebrations and represents purity, blessings and devotion.
While Panchamrit is considered a wholesome traditional preparation, experts suggest consuming it in moderation, especially for people managing conditions like diabetes or dairy intolerance.
Happy Janmashtami! Celebrate the festival with devotion and the timeless tradition of Panchamrit.
