Rudraprayag: Two Mumbai pilgrims were allegedly assaulted with sticks after an argument with mule handlers on the Kedarnath pilgrimage route in Uttarakhand. The incident in Jangalchatti has raised fresh questions over pilgrim safety and crowd management on the busy trekking route.
The incident took place in the Jangalchatti area when Mumbai residents Manji Vadhji Vaviya and Bhanji Damji Patel were walking towards Kedarnath Dham. According to police, an argument broke out between the pilgrims and mule handlers over the movement of animals along the route.
The dispute allegedly escalated, following which three mule handlers attacked the two pilgrims with sticks. The pilgrims sustained injuries and later approached Sonprayag police station to report the incident.
The Kedarnath route remains heavily used by pilgrims travelling on foot as well as horses and mules carrying devotees and goods. On narrow stretches of the trail, the movement of animals and pedestrians can become difficult, particularly during periods of heavy pilgrim traffic.
In this case, what reportedly began as an argument over the movement of mules allegedly turned into a physical confrontation. Police have not yet disclosed the exact nature or severity of the injuries suffered by the two pilgrims.
Following the complaint from the pilgrims, Sonprayag police registered a case against three unidentified mule handlers under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The provision deals with voluntarily causing hurt. Police are now working to identify the accused and collect evidence related to the alleged assault. No arrests had been announced in the latest update.
The incident has attracted wider attention after a video purportedly linked to the alleged assault circulated on social media. The footage has added to public interest in the case, although police are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The development has also renewed discussion around the conduct of mule operators and the safety of pilgrims travelling through crowded and narrow sections of the Kedarnath route.
Rudraprayag police have stressed that the safety and dignity of pilgrims remain a priority. People operating horses and mules along the pilgrimage route have been instructed to behave courteously with devotees and cooperate with the arrangements made for the yatra.
Police have also warned that misconduct, assault or any activity that disturbs law and order will invite legal action based on the evidence collected during the investigation.
The Kedarnath pilgrimage route witnesses large numbers of devotees during the yatra season. Along with pedestrians, horses and mules are used extensively to transport pilgrims and goods.
This creates a challenging environment on sections where the trail is narrow or crowded. Proper coordination between pilgrims, mule operators and authorities is therefore important to prevent disputes and ensure the smooth movement of people and animals.
The latest alleged assault has brought this issue back into focus, particularly because the incident involved pilgrims travelling to one of Uttarakhand's most prominent religious destinations.
The immediate focus of the investigation is on identifying the three mule handlers allegedly involved in the assault and determining exactly how the confrontation unfolded.
Police are continuing to gather evidence and examine the circumstances surrounding the complaint. Further legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
