New Delhi: As the monsoon season approaches, doctors are advising parents to take extra precautions to protect young children from seasonal illnesses. One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of influenza, commonly known as the flu, is timely vaccination.
Health experts say June is the ideal month for children aged six months and above to receive a flu shot, allowing their bodies enough time to build immunity before flu cases begin rising during the rainy season.
Why Are Young Children at Greater Risk?
Influenza is a contagious viral infection that affects the respiratory system. It spreads through droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Children can also catch the virus by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth.
According to Dr Jagdish Kathwate, Consultant Neonatologist and Paediatrician at Motherhood Hospital, Pune, babies and toddlers are more vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing.
“Young children are at a higher risk of complications such as pneumonia, dehydration, ear infections, and in severe cases, hospitalization,” he explained.
Common Flu Symptoms in Children
Parents should watch out for the following symptoms:
Some children may also experience vomiting and diarrhoea along with flu symptoms.
Why June Is the Best Time for Vaccination
Doctors recommend that all children aged six months and older receive the flu vaccine before influenza activity increases.
“The vaccine helps the immune system recognize and fight the virus more effectively. Since flu cases usually rise during the monsoon months, getting vaccinated in June gives children the best chance of developing protection before exposure increases,” Dr. Kathwate said.
How Parents Can Protect Children During Monsoon
Apart from vaccination, experts recommend a few simple preventive measures:
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Doctors believe that early preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of seasonal flu and its complications. For parents of babies aged six months and above, getting a flu shot before the monsoon could be an important step in keeping children healthy and safe throughout the season.
