New Delhi: Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, acidity and slow metabolism are becoming increasingly common due to stressful routines, irregular eating habits and sedentary lifestyles.
However, health experts believe the solution may not lie in expensive supplements or quick-fix detox plans, but in simple morning routines that support the body’s natural digestive rhythm.
According to Dr Narendra K Shetty, the digestive system works closely with the body’s internal clock, also known as the circadian rhythm. Disrupted mornings filled with stress, rushing and unhealthy habits can negatively affect gut health over time.
Start the Day with Warm Water
Experts recommend beginning the morning with a glass of warm water soon after waking up. Adding lemon can further help with hydration and freshness.
Dr Shetty explained that after several hours of overnight fasting, warm water gently activates the digestive tract and prepares the body for the day ahead.
Morning Yoga Can Improve Digestion
Simple stretching and yoga practices in the morning can also help improve digestion. Yoga poses such as Pawanamuktasana and Vajrasana are often recommended for relieving gas, boosting blood circulation and improving gut motility.
According to experts, even light physical movement in the morning helps stimulate abdominal organs and supports smoother digestion throughout the day.
Stress and Gut Health Are Deeply Connected
Health specialists say stress directly impacts digestion through the gut-brain axis — the communication system connecting the brain and digestive tract.
“Even five to ten minutes of deep breathing or meditation can calm the nervous system and improve digestive function,” Dr Shetty noted.
A relaxed mind and balanced nervous system may help reduce stress-related digestive discomfort, including acidity and bloating.
Healthy Breakfast Choices Matter
Skipping breakfast or consuming processed foods early in the day can gradually affect gut health. Experts advise including fibre-rich foods, fruits, soaked nuts and whole grains in breakfast to maintain healthy gut bacteria and stable energy levels.
Dr Shetty also stressed the importance of not ignoring the body’s natural urge for bowel movement, warning that repeatedly delaying it can disturb normal bowel habits.
Small Daily Habits Make a Big Difference
Experts say digestive wellness is built through consistency rather than extreme diets or temporary detox trends.
“When mornings are calm and mindful, the body naturally finds balance, and the difference can be felt throughout the day,” Dr Shetty said.
By adopting a few simple morning habits, people may be able to naturally improve digestion, boost metabolism and support long-term gut health.
